On February 22nd 2017, Srinivas Kuchibholta and Alok Madasani were shot in a Kansas bar by a man yelling “get out of my country.” Mr. Kuchibholta died from his wounds. Ian Grillot, a regular at the bar, pursued the shooter and was shot in the hand and chest. He reports that he did so in order to prevent the shooter from going after anyone else. In February (2017), Think Progress reported that 261 hate crimes against individuals and communities had occurred since the election. When counting hate crimes against public and private places like mosques and churches, that number rose to 867, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“I was just doing what anyone should have done for another human being. It’s not about where he was from, or his ethnicity. We’re all humans. I just did what was naturally right to do.”
